The instructions to program the keyless entry fob on one BMW model won’t necessarily work on another BMW model. You can try one of two sets of instructions and see if they work for your BMW. Your aim is to avoid resorting to the dealership, which may charge $50 to $100 for the service.
- Simply take the new key fob and hold it against the marked spot on the right side of the steering column and then start the car (obviously a working key fob is needed). That's all it took to activate the new fob. In fact, the Nav screen immediately popped up with a request to name the profile associated with the new key fob.
- Nov 08, 2018 AFAIK, for the E90, you cannot code the keys after the chip is produced, they are only coded in the production line, and you cannot decode them after that. BMW makes 10 chips for every car, and keeps it with them. If you lose a key, you have to have one made in.
- Jan 25, 2019 Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button. To reprogram the round BMW key, enter the car and close the door before inserting the key into the ignition. Look at the ignition and turn the key to position one, and then turn it back to position zero. Remove the key and press and hold the button that unlock the car.

I've lost one of the keys to our 330d and I wondered if anyone could give me an idea of replacement cost and the hassle involved.

Not sure how much a dealer would charge. But I was searching eBay for BMW key rings and sellers offering fobs appeared in some quantity. I was surprised because I would have though they would be supplied only via dealers or official channels. The fobs appeared identical to the originals I have for my 330d. But I have no idea if there would be issues. They seemed quite cheap and worth a look? If only to use to get discount from a dealer?
Has anyone used a fob from an eBay seller? I guess you'd need to know how to program one into you car?

My understanding is that the keys are produced for a specific car - there is no programming as such. You can order them through a BMW dealer only after you have presented the registration document and a form of identification. The 'electronic' key is about £130 and the 'back up Key' which fits in the fob is about £20. Delivery should take about three or four days.

Yes programming is the wrong term. It's perhaps more accurately described as registration. I would imagine that each fob has a unique code. The cars system is instructed to respond to this new fob via a process or special equipment.
